Bailey:
I was a vice-chair of PPI from 2016 to 2019, then became chair and elected chair in 2020, social worker by profession, works at a women shelter, writer, anti-fascist. It's been amazing to be your chair in the past year, I hope I can continues, so we can involve more members, become more active and unified movement, keep doing what we started such as the standing committees, set-up web shop, we talked about an intl. Pirate radio built on Pirates on Air. We should get more coordinated global support. We're ina postition to help each other promote stuff. I think a lot of what we do in the future must be what you, members, want. It's important that we keep up with getting better at communicating, sharing ideas, bringing forward things we want to see as a movement. Work together towards what we want. Let the board know what you want. If you decide or don't decide to re-elect me, thanks for everything and I love this movement and community. Thanks for listening.
Jelle: What do you do in daily life?
Bailey: I'm a social worker at a women shelter. Activism is a passion of mine.
Jelle: I'm from Antwerp and chair of the Antwerp Pirates, cannabis activist, film maker and social media entrepreneur. We participate in elections every year. We need to be present, our standards need to be developed and we need to enter the political arena.
Mauricio: Why do you, Jelle, want to be chair?
Jelle: Out of interest. I see a very important question and I represent Europe first and Belgium second. Europe doesn't have to be so harsh and gameificated. So people can take a break from life, that's my goal.

Election of Board Members

https://ga.pp-international.net/t/nominations-for-ppi-board/270/2
  • PPNO and PPDE nominate Michal Gill PPCZ as board member of PPI
  • PPNO and PPDE nominates Carlos Polo PPCH as board member of PPI
  • PPNO nominates Ji Yong Dijkhuis PPNL as board member of PPI
  • PPDE nominates Manuel Caicedo PP-CL
  • PPDE nominates Dario Castañe PP-CAT
  • There were also nominations for alternate board member.
    • PPDE, PPCZ, and PPNO nominate Ji Yong Dijkhuis PP-NL.
We join the board election and the altenrate board member election:
JiYong from PPNL: I definitely do not want to be elected to the board. I am the intl. coordinator of the PPNL. I enjoyed working with the PPI so far. I want to contribute positively. I sort of explicitely want to go for alternate board member only, because inside Netherlands I'm only up for election in March, so I won't be available before that.
Michal Gill from PPCZ: I have been on the board for the past 2 years, since the Munich GA. I enjoy this immensely. The international part has always been my main interest in politics. If re-elected, I can promise that I will do my best to keep PPI alive and doing the good work that we started in the past year. Bailey mentioned in the board speech that many of the PPI work is doing well, while previously we did not produce much due to internal structures. I see us moving forward in a good way and would like to contribute.
Carlos from PPCH: I am a member of PPI for some time now, and main rep. for PPI Geneva since 2019. Since then I have been working to prepresent PPI to other NGOs. As an alternate board member I try to participate where I can give of my time. As Vice PResident of the Swiss pirate party I have worked on the cooporation between our parties and to help the image of our parties within the diplomatic areas. We are helping build best practices in Geneve. I just want the opportunity as a board member to contribute now so our voices can be heard on the higher level. Thank you for your suport. I hope to contribute in the future in a positive way in PPI.
Manuel Caicedo from PPCL: I have been participating in PPCL since 2017, I have been occupying several roles inside the national council, member of the council of the Uni of Chile in 2018, member of the council of delegates at the Uni and a regional coordinator of the party. I've been supporting ou party's international task force from this year. Several board members know me as therepresentative of the Chilean PP. I'm a college student and mainly active in international NGO's. I think I can be useful as a board member because PPCL can provide different prespective as a new member. We are in an interesting position to expand our work. I would be glad to contribute. Thank you.
Dario Castañe from PPCAT: Thanks for the nomination. I'm the intl. coordinator for PPCAT, I've been member of the party board, candidate for Spain on 2014 European Elections, and city council member at my town from 2015 to 2019. I'm an active member of Freedome to Share ECI, and I've been spokeperson for Basic Income ECI. I'm a software engineer at a small startup in Barcelona, and free software developer in my free time. Like Bailey I'm a libertarian socialist Pirate, but Pirate at the core. I'd like to provide my experience on digital participation and collaboration to the international Pirates.

https://ga.pp-international.net/t/ahead-of-maduro-regime-s-sham-elections-in-venezuela-tomorrow-6d-2020/310

Henry (PP Venezuela):
  • Statement from PP Venezuela to be voted on:
PPI makes this statement: Democratic nations must collectively and unequivocally reject this latest illegitimate electoral process. Legitimate legislative and presidential elections that meet international standards are the only credible path forward for resolving Venezuela’s protracted political crisis.

Questions:

Peter: what are we voting on here? Making a resolution or statement? Needs to be a yes or no question.
Henry: Add "PPI makes the statement"
Greg: Can you tell us more about how these elections are run?
Henry: Effectively, from a democratic point of view, in Venezuela we have an institution called a national electoral council. This council is run by the Maduro regime. It is meant to be a non-partisan body, but it isn't. Since the last election, it has blocked parties like ourselves from participating. They go through a process where they say it is democratic process, which it is not.
Manuel: I'd like to compliment the Venezuelan delegation on bringing this up. Please, correct me if I'm wrong, but the crisis looks like it contains a lot of issues brought up by parts of the Venezuelan government. The electoral authorit claimed fraud in some constituencies, seats were taken and the legislation is now in contempt of court. Several opposition parties have been denied the right to participate in the elections.
Henry: I'd like to explain: It's a complex issue, effectively, Maduro regime stacked the supreme court with allies, members of own party, so any decision after that point was by the legislature declared null. The new legislature in 2015 then appointed new justices, thus we have one supreme court in exile. It's quite an awful thing, actually.
  • Proposal voted on:
PPI makes this statement: "Democratic nations must collectively and unequivocally reject this latest illegitimate electoral process. Legitimate legislative and presidential elections that meet international standards are the only credible path forward for resolving Venezuela’s protracted political crisis."
  • Pirate Party of Austria - abstain
  • Pirate Party of Catalonia ½Vote - abstain

  • One small addition suggested by Ji Yong for AOB: About to put more emphasis on the collaboration we can do. I would like to thank all the parties that contributed videos for our 10th anniversary. I'm going to paste some of those videos in the chat. I think it shows the value of the international Pirate Party movement.
Manuel: We voted NO on the last election because there was a controversy between our delegates. We consider the historical experience, political instability, Venezuela's relationship with the US. We believe to some extent. We are not Venezuelans. We are not interested in bad relations, even when the complexity of the issues. Considering the problems, without making remarks about the crisis and the implications. Given the discussions that we had among us, that instead of voting yes to this motion, we propose no.
Henry: I respect Manuel's opinion.

Keynote by Marcel Kolaja

Ahoy Pirates!
With the board elections today, it is a big day for the Pirate Parties International and congratulations to all elected board members as well as to the elected members of the Court of Arbitration! It’s been 10 years since the Pirate Parties International founding conference in Brussels. At that time, there weren’t many Pirates elected as citizen representatives. Apart from our Member of the European Parliament of the Swedish Pirate Party Christian Engström, none that I am aware of.
Today, we have 4 elected Members of the European Parliament, 1 from Germany and 3 from Czechia. And it’s not just that. If you were told just two years ago that one of the Vice-Presidents of the European Parliament would be a Pirate soon, you probably wouldn’t believe. Yet, I have the honor to be one. And of course, it’s not only the European Parliament where we’ve been succeeding. In Czechia, we have 22 representatives in the lower chamber of the Parliament and 2 Senators. We have 2 Members of the Parliament in Luxembourg. And we are successful also beyond the European Union. We’ve been having Members of the Parliament in Iceland since 2012. And all that was only possible with the help of all of you: The Pirates around the world.
The Internet has always been at the core of our Pirate values. Now, in the times of a global pandemic, it is becoming clear for everyone, how important the Internet is for our society. Many people as well as businesses started to use the opportunity provided by on-line communication more than before. However, we also need to make sure that our society is fair and equal in today’s digital world: in access to information, education, job, to the democratic process. And that’s what we have always been fighting for.
And we know that we’ve been facing many challenges. Not only that we need to make sure that broadband Internet connectivity is available also in rural areas, we also need to make sure that the future technology does not discriminate. With the coming age of Artificial Intelligence, there has never been a more crucial moment in history in that respect. In addition to that, there have been several pieces of legislation in the making at the European level that will have a major effect on how the Internet will look like in the following decades. It’s not only the copyright directive and the regulation on removing terrorist content on-line, it’s also the Digital Services Act and the Digital Markets Act, which will shape the rules for entities operating on-line. All in all, I believe that there hasn’t been a more important moment in the history from the Pirate perspective.
The Pirates will pursue not only for a free and open Internet but also for a free, informed, educated, and digitally interconnected society.
I wish all of us good luck in that endeavor, I don’t need to tell you to what extent the Internet and new technologies will impact our future society. We need to make sure that everybody can benefit from technological development, not just large corporations building monopolies. For that, we need you. The Pirates around the world. People who understand these values and I pay a tremendous amount of respect to all of you who sacrifice their private time to pursue these values.

Thank you!

  • Gregory: Mentions about Mumble need to enable applause.
  • Bailey: Thank you so much Marcel for being here today. It's so great to hear from you. You are doing great work in the EU parliament. To everyone else, I would like to thank you for being here. It's been a very busy weekend and time for everyone.
PPI this weekend, PPEU last weekend. Lots of nation GA's. So thank you for your time doing that. Thanks to all the outgoing members of the PPI bodies for their job. Everybody's done really good job in this year. No matter whether you hold any position or not, I still hope all of us will keep participating in our endeavours. To everyone who's been elected today - please, do stick around for a few minutes so we can take your detail. To the rest, no matter what holiday you celebrate, happy holidays and see you again in the new year.
Linda: As an outgoing member of the board, thanks to everyone. I gained experience with Pirates from all over the world and wish the new board good luck - I'm sure you'll do great work.
Bastian: Congratulations to all elected people, thank you to the previous board. I also updated the PayPal data to the wiki, so you can see it there. To all elected people, please, send your details to the board e-mail board@pp-international.net, so we can update everything.
Manuel: Thanks to Mancel and Bailey for their powerful words. It shows their confidence in the common values the PPI is striving for. I hope that we can only grow bigger and louder from now on. Thank you to everybody.
Henry: Thank you to everyone for the warm welcome. See you next time.
Gregory: Thank you to the delegates for a good and quiet GA (it wasn't always that way). Minutes were taken easier thanks to you and thanks to Marco even though he won't be chairing in the afternoon since it's not going to take place anymore.
Bailey: Thanks to Gregory for chairing, to Keith, Linda, Mike for minutes, to Bastian for all the technical stuff. It's early, so I'm forgetting people, but I appreciate all of you.
Gregory: I declare the 2020 December Online GA finished. Thank you very much.
